PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Creating History, Experiencing Personal Growth
By Garrett Shepperd, ACEA President
Following in the Path Laid Out for Leadership
I almost can’t believe that my term is over. In some ways it feels like yesterday I was contemplating the challenges of serving on the board, then suddenly I’m president, and now the year has flown by. It has been a hectic, challenging, but fun year, and I would not trade the experience.
My father, Greg Shepperd, was president of the ACEA Board 2006-2007. I have been attending ACEA events for many years before actually joining a committee. I have seen first-hand the commitment and the passion for the work and for the association. It was a natural progression for me to get involved, join the board, and eventually serve as one of the youngest board presidents in ACEA history.

Taking on a leadership role is an easy way to test your time management skills, your diplomacy and communication. It can also be a way of finding that sweet spot where you are able to manage and you find yourself enjoying the role.
It has not been easy, but it has been fun and rewarding in many ways. Taking on a leadership role is an easy way to test your time management skills, your diplomacy and communication. It can also be a way of finding that sweet spot where you are able to manage and you find yourself enjoying the role.
ACEA has faced the usual challenges this past year, but with the board’s help and guidance, the association is poised for growth and is in a strong position for the future. We keep innovating and introducing new ideas and programs. The Construction Expo was the best yet and will keep getting better. The dates for the Coffee Chats are quickly snapped up by members wanting to host these networking get-togethers. Similarly, the Symposium was the crown-jewel in our event lineup this year. The new venue was a great choice by the committee and the session line-up was excellent.
I hope you will take a page out of my book and get involved. The opportunity is there and we make it easy to participate. Committees meet at the ACEA office over lunch. There is also a remote option, but really, the best networking happens face-to-face. Get outside of your comfort zone. Believe me, I know it is not always comfortable, but you will be so glad once you see how many new friendships you made in a single year. I am amazed and humbled. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. \ CP
